No longer is text just used for content, it is considered an integral part of the overall design. While 3D has been around in various styles of print design for a long time, its somewhat new in the world of web design.

Most of these look like the 3d was created in a 3d program, rendered, and then brought into Photoshop. The dimension itself wasn’t done in Photoshop. (Although in CS4 Extended some 3d models could have been brought in from a 3d program and manipulated, just not modeled.)

some of them yes, some of them were created directly in Photoshop. if you take a look at the 3d text tutorials you will see examples of both.
