Great article… and great timing for me to find now as I’m in the midst of a pretty awful job for a pretty awful client. I think it’s quite near the end, so maybe worth hanging on… but then again, I also thought that a month ago…

I love this read. It is so true! I just want to say something in addition to this. We are in a bad economy, not because there is no work. There is plenty of work. We are in a bad economy because people just don’t want to pay. People expect things for free these days and that is a shame. In my quest for helping small businesses to grow, I find that over 40% do not want to deal with the financial responsibility it takes to get there, thus putting a strain on my finances. Ex. I can’t pay bills when I work and the client doesn’t want to pay. I have one very valuable rule: I don’t work for you unless I get paid first. Now, I am starting to ask for 70% instead of 50% down payment. This rule has started to really change my business model for the better.

Some great advice in this post, i think this fits in with many industries but we come across it a lot with in digital marketing and the clients this brings, i guess it’s important to stay positive and know that there are a lot of potential clients out there.

Lets not let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch. I hire webdesigners on a regular basis and to date I have not had any form of disagreement in the course of any project. The key is to spell out all the terms from the start and be sure all parties understand these terms before proceeding. This strategy is yet to let me down.

This is so true. I had to let a client go recently because the negative impact was just astonishing. She still thinks I fired her out of sour grapes unbelievably. She ticked every box in your article. A week later she was back demanding changes to her site to coincide with a campaign. I had to remind her that she had paid a mere £42 to date (less than 10%), and that not only would I not do the work but I would take the site down if she did not pay me the agreed severance fee immediately. Can you believe she threatened me with Trading Standards and suing me for interruption of business AND called me a BULLY !

Very helpful article and comments. I’m hoping that it helps to aim for more educated clients. In my experience, it does. I’m reeling this morning from a call from a guy (new prospect) who wanted me to fix the site that he paid someone else a bunch of money to screw up – but, he didn’t want to pay me. It turned into a near shouting match when he said I didn’t deserve my (very reasonable) fees and I had to remind him that I have years of college, a degree and experience – that’s my “overhead.” I’m experiencing this kind of thing more with blue collar prospects who don’t see the value of my work, in the first place. He was clearly looking for freebies and shortcuts – and there are none if you want the job done right!
